The case for shooting at home

The pressure of finding the "perfect" location can actually work against you. When families are relaxed — when kids are in their own space surrounded by their own things — the photographs reflect that ease. And that ease is exactly what makes a portrait feel real rather than performed.

Some of our most loved client galleries come from living room floors, backyard swings, and kitchen breakfast tables. These are the spaces where your family actually lives, and that context adds meaning to every frame.

What makes a home session work

  • Natural window light — a large window in a living room or bedroom is all we need for beautiful, soft portraits
  • Familiar surroundings — kids especially are more themselves at home than anywhere else
  • No travel stress — getting the family dressed, loaded up, and to a location on time is its own challenge. Staying home eliminates all of it
  • The little details — a favorite toy, a well-loved couch, a bookshelf full of family life — these details tell your story in ways a park cannot

How to prepare your home

We send a preparation guide to every client before an in-home session. The short version: tidy the main areas we'll shoot in, open the blinds, and choose outfits in coordinated neutrals. We handle the rest — moving furniture if needed, finding the best light angles, and making sure everyone feels comfortable before we start.
